How I Treat Muscular Pain
A Personalised Therapeutic Massage Approach for Pain Relief, Muscle Tension & Improved Movement
Muscular pain rarely has one simple cause. Whether you're struggling with persistent back pain, neck and shoulder tension, aching hips, tight calves, forearm pain or long-standing muscle stiffness, every person experiences pain differently.
That's why every treatment begins by understanding your symptoms, how your body moves and what may be contributing to your discomfort.
Using a combination of Deep Tissue Massage, Trigger Point Therapy, Myofascial Release and Therapeutic Stretching, I tailor every treatment to help reduce muscular pain, relieve tension, improve mobility and support long-term movement.
Understanding Your Pain
Pain is often felt in one area of the body, but the muscles contributing to that discomfort may be somewhere else.
For example, tight hip flexors, gluteal muscles or hamstrings may influence movement through the lower back. Tight calf muscles can affect the ankle and place additional strain on the knee, while overworked forearm muscles may contribute to discomfort around the elbow or wrist. Likewise, tension through the chest, upper back and shoulders can influence neck movement and contribute to persistent muscle tension.
Rather than focusing only on where it hurts, I assess how your muscles work together to identify the areas that may be contributing to your symptoms.
Every Treatment Starts With an Assessment
Your first appointment begins with a conversation about your symptoms, lifestyle and medical history, followed by a Range of Motion (ROM) assessment.
This simple assessment helps identify areas of muscular tightness, restricted movement and reduced flexibility, allowing me to build a treatment around your individual needs.
Because every person is different, there is no standard massage routine. Treatment is adapted throughout the appointment to address your muscular pain, movement restrictions and goals.
The Techniques I Use
Every therapeutic massage may include one or more of the following techniques, depending on what your body needs.
Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue Massage is a therapeutic massage technique designed to target deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue to help reduce muscular tension, stiffness, and restricted movement.
Using slow, controlled pressure and specific techniques, it can help release areas of tightness caused by posture, repetitive activity, physical work, exercise, or stress. Treatment is always adapted to your comfort and individual needs rather than simply applying strong pressure.
Deep Tissue Massage is often combined with other therapeutic approaches to support improved mobility, reduce muscular discomfort, and encourage healthier movement patterns.
Benefits may include:
Reduced muscle tension
Improved mobility
Less stiffness
Support for recovery
Trigger Point Therapy
Trigger Point Therapy is a targeted therapeutic massage technique that focuses on identifying and working with areas of increased tension and sensitivity within muscles and surrounding tissues. These areas, commonly known as trigger points, can contribute to local muscle pain, stiffness, restricted movement, and referred pain patterns felt in other areas of the body.
Rather than simply applying strong pressure, effective trigger point work involves understanding muscular patterns and how different areas of tension may contribute to discomfort. Using careful assessment and specific techniques, treatment aims to reduce muscular tension, ease pain associated with trigger points, and restore more comfortable movement.
Trigger Point Therapy is often combined with Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release, and Therapeutic Stretching to support a personalised approach to muscular pain and mobility.
Benefits of Trigger Point Therapy may include:
Reduced muscle pain and tension
Helping the body recover from overuse and repetitive strain
Improved movement and flexibility
Reduced referred pain patterns
Myofascial Release
Myofascial Release is a gentle therapeutic technique that focuses on the fascia, the connective tissue network that surrounds and supports muscles, joints, and other structures throughout the body. When fascia becomes restricted through injury, repetitive movement, poor posture, or physical stress, it may contribute to feelings of tightness, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Using slow, sustained pressure and gentle stretching techniques, Myofascial Release helps encourage tissues to soften and move more freely. It can be particularly useful for addressing ongoing tension, postural imbalances, and movement restrictions as part of a personalised treatment approach.
Benefits of Myofascial Release may include:
Frees fascial restrictions
Improved tissue mobility
Enhanced flexibility
Reduces stiffness
Therapeutic Stretching
Therapeutic Stretching is a hands-on treatment approach designed to improve flexibility, reduce muscle tightness, and support healthier movement patterns. Assisted stretching techniques are used to target areas of restriction that may develop through prolonged sitting, exercise, physical work, repetitive activities, or previous injuries.
Each stretch is carefully adapted to your individual needs, current flexibility, and comfort level. When combined with therapeutic massage techniques, stretching can help improve range of motion, reduce muscular restrictions, and support better posture, mobility, and overall movement quality for everyday activities.
Benefits of Therapeutic Stretching may include:
Increases flexibility and range of movement
Reduces muscle tightness
Supports joint health and mobility
Improves posture and alignment
Relaxing Massage
Relaxing Massage is a gentle and calming treatment designed to reduce stress, ease general muscular tension, and promote overall wellbeing. Using slow, flowing massage techniques, it helps encourage relaxation, improve circulation, and support the body’s natural ability to unwind.
Everyday stress, fatigue, and busy lifestyles can often contribute to tension, particularly around the neck, shoulders, and back. Relaxing Massage can be tailored to your individual needs, whether your goal is stress reduction, recovery support, improved relaxation, or simply allowing your body time to rest and restore balance.
Benefits of Relaxing Massage may include:
reduce stress and promote relaxation
Calms nervous system
Sense of physical and mental restoration
Promotes wellbeing

Frequently Asked Questions
Can therapeutic massage help my pain?
If your discomfort is related to muscular tension, tightness or restricted movement, therapeutic massage may help reduce tension, improve mobility and support more comfortable movement. If you're unsure whether it's appropriate for you, please get in touch before booking.
Do I need to know what's causing my pain before booking?
No. Many clients know where it hurts but aren't sure why.
During your first appointment, we'll discuss your symptoms and carry out a Range of Motion (ROM) assessment to identify areas of restriction and understand which muscles may be contributing to your discomfort. This allows me to tailor your treatment using the most appropriate combination of techniques.
Can massage help with chronic muscle pain?
Many of my clients have been living with muscular pain for months or even years.
While every person responds differently, therapeutic massage can help reduce long-standing muscle tension, improve movement and make everyday activities more comfortable. The focus is always on understanding the factors contributing to your symptoms and tailoring treatment to your individual needs.
Do you only treat people who are in pain?
No. While many clients come to me for help with muscular pain or chronic tension, others book to improve flexibility, aid recovery after exercise or simply enjoy a relaxing massage.
How many treatments will I need?
Everyone is different, but many people notice some improvement within the first one or two sessions. It is rare for a single appointment to have any lasting effect, so a short course of treatment is often more effective than a single appointment.
As a general guide, I would usually expect to see some improvement from the first or second session with major relief by around six sessions, depending on how long the issue has been present and how your body responds to treatment. After that, some people choose to move onto a maintenance plan to help manage recurring tension and keep things feeling more comfortable.
