Therapeutic Massage

for Muscle Pain & Stiffness

Muscle pain and stiffness can affect almost any part of the body.

Whether it's a tight neck after long days at a desk, sore calves after running, aching hips from prolonged sitting or persistent forearm tension from repetitive work, muscular discomfort can make everyday activities feel harder than they should.

Many people don't experience one isolated area of pain. Instead, tight muscles in one part of the body often affect how another area moves, leading to stiffness, reduced mobility and ongoing discomfort.

I specialise in helping people reduce muscular pain, relieve tension and move more comfortably through personalised therapeutic massage.

Appointments are available in Horsham and Ewhurst near Cranleigh, with every treatment tailored specifically to your body, your symptoms and your goals.

Understanding Muscle Pain & Stiffness

Your body is designed to move as one connected system. When muscles become tight, overworked or restricted, other muscles often work harder to compensate. Over time, this can lead to pain, stiffness and reduced movement, not only in the affected area but elsewhere in the body.

For example, tight hip flexors, gluteal muscles or hamstrings may alter the way you move through your hips and lower back. Tight calf muscles can reduce ankle mobility and contribute to increased strain around the knee during walking or running. Likewise, tension through the chest, upper back and shoulders can influence neck movement, while overworked forearm muscles may contribute to discomfort around the elbow and wrist.

Common contributing factors include:

  • Sitting for long periods

  • Physical or repetitive work

  • Exercise and sport

  • Poor posture

  • Stress-related muscle tension

  • Previous muscular injuries

  • Repetitive lifting

  • Reduced movement or flexibility

Areas Commonly Affected by Muscle Pain

Muscular pain and stiffness can develop almost anywhere in the body and often builds up gradually through everyday life rather than from a single injury.

Some clients visit because of persistent lower back pain, while others are struggling with ongoing neck and shoulder tension after long hours at a desk or driving. Others are experiencing discomfort around the hips and glutes after prolonged sitting, tight hamstrings following exercise, or calf pain that makes walking or running uncomfortable.

It's also common to see forearm pain, elbow pain and wrist discomfort in people who spend long hours using a computer, carrying out repetitive manual work or regularly gripping tools. Likewise, tight muscles around the chest, upper back or shoulder blades can contribute to restricted movement and make everyday activities feel more difficult.

Muscular discomfort may also affect the quadriceps, adductors, IT band, feet or the muscles around the hips, particularly after increased activity, repetitive movement or long periods of inactivity.

Although pain may be felt in one area, the muscles contributing to that discomfort aren't always located where you feel the symptoms. That's why every treatment begins by understanding how your body moves as a whole, rather than simply focusing on the painful area.

A Personalised Approach to Treatment

No two people experience muscular pain in exactly the same way.

That's why every appointment begins with a conversation about your symptoms, your daily activities and what you'd like to achieve from treatment.

As part of your first appointment, I carry out a Range of Motion (ROM) assessment to identify areas of restriction and assess how your body moves. This helps me understand which muscles may be contributing to your discomfort so your treatment can be tailored specifically to your needs.

Depending on your assessment, your massage may include a combination of:

  • Deep Tissue Massage

  • Trigger Point Therapy

  • Myofascial Release

  • Therapeutic Stretching

Rather than using one technique in isolation, I combine the approaches that I believe will provide the greatest benefit for your individual presentation.

The aim of treatment is to:

  • Reduce muscular pain

  • Relieve muscle tension

  • Improve movement and flexibility

  • Reduce stiffness

  • Improve tissue mobility

  • Help you move more comfortably in everyday life

Helping You Move More Comfortably

Many clients tell me they're not looking to run marathons or achieve peak athletic performance—they simply want to move without constantly being reminded that something hurts.

Whether that's getting comfortable at your desk, walking the dog, playing with your children or grandchildren, enjoying the gym, gardening, sleeping better or simply getting through the working day with less discomfort, improving the way your muscles move can have a real impact on everyday life.

By identifying areas of restriction and tailoring treatment to your individual needs, therapeutic massage works to reduce muscular tension, improve mobility and help restore more comfortable movement throughout the body.

Is Therapeutic Massage Right for You?

Therapeutic massage may be appropriate if you're experiencing:

  • Muscle pain

  • Muscle stiffness

  • Tight muscles

  • Reduced flexibility

  • Restricted movement

  • Chronic muscular tension

  • Muscle knots

  • General muscular aches and pains

  • Discomfort following exercise

  • Pain associated with overworked muscles

Whether your pain is affecting your neck, shoulders, upper back, lower back, hips, glutes, hamstrings, knees, calves, forearms, elbows or wrists, the first step is understanding why those muscles have become overloaded and how your body may be compensating.

By combining a detailed consultation, a Range of Motion (ROM) assessment and personalised therapeutic massage, I aim to identify the muscles contributing to your discomfort and create a treatment that helps reduce muscular pain, improve movement and restore more comfortable function.

If your symptoms have developed suddenly following significant trauma, or are accompanied by numbness, weakness, unexplained swelling, fever or other concerning symptoms, it's important to seek appropriate medical advice before booking a massage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can therapeutic massage help my pain?

If your discomfort is related to muscular tension, tightness or restricted movement, therapeutic massage may help reduce tension, improve mobility and support more comfortable movement. If you're unsure whether it's appropriate for you, please get in touch before booking.

Do I need to know what's causing my pain before booking?

No. Many clients know where it hurts but aren't sure why.

During your first appointment, we'll discuss your symptoms and carry out a Range of Motion (ROM) assessment to identify areas of restriction and understand which muscles may be contributing to your discomfort. This allows me to tailor your treatment using the most appropriate combination of techniques.

Can massage help with chronic muscle pain?

Many of my clients have been living with muscular pain for months or even years. While every person responds differently, therapeutic massage can help reduce long-standing muscle tension, improve movement and make everyday activities more comfortable. The focus is always on understanding the factors contributing to your symptoms and tailoring treatment to your individual needs.

Do you only treat people who are in pain?

No. While many clients come to me for help with muscular pain or chronic tension, others book to improve flexibility, aid recovery after exercise or simply enjoy a relaxing massage.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different, but many people notice some improvement within the first one or two sessions. It is rare for a single appointment to have any lasting effect, so a short course of treatment is often more effective than a single appointment.

As a general guide, I would usually expect to see some improvement from the first or second session with major relief by around six sessions, depending on how long the issue has been present and how your body responds to treatment. After that, some people choose to move onto a maintenance plan to help manage recurring tension and keep things feeling more comfortable.
