Therapeutic Massage

for Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain is an incredibly common reasons people seek massage therapy.

Whether it develops gradually through everyday activities or follows a period of increased physical demand, muscular lower back pain can make even simple tasks feel uncomfortable.

Lower back pain can have many different causes. When muscles and soft tissues are contributing to your discomfort, therapeutic massage can help reduce muscular tension, improve movement and support greater day-to-day comfort.

I specialise in helping people reduce muscular pain, relieve tension and move more comfortably through personalised therapeutic massage. Every treatment is tailored to your individual needs, with appointments available in Horsham and Ewhurst, near Cranleigh.

Is massage right for my lower back pain?

Many of my clients come to see me after trying to manage muscular back pain on their own for weeks, months or even years.

They often tell me they have been stretching, resting or using heat, but still feel tight, restricted or uncomfortable during everyday activities.

If your discomfort appears to be muscular in nature, therapeutic massage may help reduce tension, improve mobility and support more comfortable movement.

If your symptoms suggest that massage may not be the most appropriate option, I will always advise you accordingly. Your wellbeing is more important than simply booking an appointment.

Why does muscular lower back pain develop?

The lower back does not work in isolation. It works together with the hips, pelvis, glutes and surrounding muscles to provide stability and allow comfortable movement.

When muscles become tight, overworked or restricted, they can affect how the body moves. This may contribute to feelings of stiffness, discomfort, reduced flexibility, the formation of trigger points or the feeling that your movement is limited.

Muscular tension can build up for many reasons, including:

  • Long periods of sitting.

  • Repetitive movements.

  • Physical work.

  • Exercise or changes in activity levels.

  • Previous injuries.

  • Poor movement habits.

  • General muscular overload.

  • Or you just wake up with it

Trigger points, also known as "knots in the muscles", are small areas of increased sensitivity that can sometimes develop in overloaded muscles. These areas may contribute to local discomfort or pain that is felt elsewhere, which is one reason the source of muscular pain isn't always exactly where you feel it.

The fascia, which is the connective tissue surrounding and supporting muscles, can also influence how freely tissues move. When areas of the body become restricted or less mobile, this may contribute to feelings of tightness and stiffness.

This is why lower back discomfort is not always about the exact area where you feel pain. The lower back, hips, glutes and surrounding tissues all work together, and understanding these connections is an important part of creating a personalised treatment approach.

How therapeutic massage can help lower back pain

Therapeutic massage is designed to address pain, reduce muscular tension, support improved movement and help people manage ongoing muscular discomfort.

During an appointment, I take time to understand how your lower back is affecting you, including:

  • Where you feel discomfort.

  • How your movement is affected.

  • When symptoms tend to appear.

  • Your daily activities and lifestyle.

  • Areas that feel tight, restricted or sensitive.

Treatment is then tailored around your individual needs rather than following a standard routine.

Depending on what your body needs, treatment may incorporate techniques such as:

  • Deep Tissue Massage to work with areas of persistent muscular tension and stiffness.

  • Trigger Point Therapy to focus on muscular knots and areas of sensitivity or tightness.

  • Myofascial Release to work with restrictions in the connective tissues surrounding muscles.

  • Therapeutic Stretching to encourage comfortable movement and flexibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can therapeutic massage help my pain?

If your discomfort is related to muscular tension, tightness or restricted movement, therapeutic massage may help reduce tension, improve mobility and support more comfortable movement. If you're unsure whether it's appropriate for you, please get in touch before booking.

Do I need to choose a specific massage technique?

No. Your appointment is tailored to your needs. I will use the most appropriate combination of techniques based on your symptoms and treatment goals.

Is lower back pain always caused by tight muscles?

No. Lower back pain can have many different causes. If your symptoms suggest massage may not be appropriate, I'll discuss this with you before treatment.

How many treatments will I need?

Everyone is different, but many people notice some improvement within the first one or two sessions. It is rare for a single appointment to have any lasting effect, so a short course of treatment is often more effective than a single appointment.

As a general guide, I would usually expect to see some improvement from the first or second session with major relief by around six sessions, depending on how long the issue has been present and how your body responds to treatment. After that, some people choose to move onto a maintenance plan to help manage recurring tension and keep things feeling more comfortable.
