Therapeutic Massage
for Neck & Shoulder Pain
Neck and shoulder pain is one of the most common reasons people book a therapeutic massage.
Whether it has developed gradually through desk work, driving or everyday life, or has become worse after physical activity, muscular tension can make even simple movements uncomfortable.
Many people don't seek treatment until the pain starts affecting their daily life. Looking over your shoulder while driving, sleeping comfortably, working at a computer or simply relaxing can all become difficult when the muscles around the neck and shoulders are tight or restricted.
I specialise in helping people reduce muscular pain, relieve tension and move more comfortably through personalised therapeutic massage.
Appointments are available in Horsham and Ewhurst near Cranleigh, with every treatment tailored specifically to your body and your symptoms.
Why Does Neck & Shoulder Pain Develop?
The neck and shoulders are made up of a complex network of muscles that work together to support your head, control movement and stabilise the upper body. Because these muscles work together, pain isn't always felt where the underlying problem begins.
When muscles become overworked or tight, they can restrict movement and place additional strain on surrounding tissues. Often it isn't one single cause, but a combination of everyday habits that gradually overload certain muscles over time.
Common causes of muscular neck and shoulder pain include:
-
Prolonged desk work
-
Poor workstation setup
-
Driving for long periods
-
Looking down at phones or tablets
-
Stress-related muscle tension
-
Repetitive lifting
-
Gym training and sport
-
Carrying young children
-
Sleeping positions
-
Previous muscular injuries
Many clients also experience stiffness, reduced movement or tension-type headaches that are associated with tight muscles around the neck and shoulders. Where muscular tension is a contributing factor, therapeutic massage can often help relieve this tension while improving mobility and comfort.
How Therapeutic Massage Can Help
No two clients experience neck and shoulder pain in exactly the same way, which is why every treatment begins with a discussion about your symptoms, daily activities and movement.
As part of your first appointment, I carry out a Range of Motion (ROM) assessment to identify areas of restriction and understand which muscles may be contributing to your discomfort. This allows me to tailor your treatment rather than following the same routine for every client.
Your massage may include a combination of:
-
Deep Tissue Massage
-
Trigger Point Therapy
-
Myofascial Release
-
Therapeutic Stretching
For example, if trigger points are contributing to muscular pain or referred pain patterns, I may incorporate Trigger Point Therapy alongside other techniques to help reduce muscle tension, improve movement and restore more comfortable function. Every technique is integrated into your treatment according to your individual needs.
The aim of treatment is to:
-
Reduce muscular pain
-
Relieve muscle tension
-
Improve movement and flexibility
-
Reduce stiffness
-
Improve tissue mobility
-
Help you move more comfortably in everyday life
Is Therapeutic Massage Right for You?
Many of my clients seek treatment because they are experiencing:
-
Neck pain
-
Shoulder pain
-
Upper back tension
-
Muscle knots
-
Chronic muscular pain
-
Reduced range of movement
-
Stiffness after work
-
Tension-type headaches associated with muscular tightness
If your symptoms are primarily muscular in nature, therapeutic massage can be an effective way to reduce pain, relieve tension and improve movement. Every treatment is tailored to your individual presentation, helping address the factors contributing to your discomfort rather than simply focusing on where it hurts.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can therapeutic massage help my pain?
If your discomfort is related to muscular tension, tightness or restricted movement, therapeutic massage may help reduce tension, improve mobility and support more comfortable movement. If you're unsure whether it's appropriate for you, please get in touch before booking.
Do I need to choose a specific massage technique?
No. Your appointment is tailored to your needs. I will use the most appropriate combination of techniques based on your symptoms and treatment goals.
Is lower back pain always caused by tight muscles?
No. Lower back pain can have many different causes. If your symptoms suggest massage may not be appropriate, I'll discuss this with you before treatment.
How many treatments will I need?
Everyone is different, but many people notice some improvement within the first one or two sessions. It is rare for a single appointment to have any lasting effect, so a short course of treatment is often more effective than a single appointment.
As a general guide, I would usually expect to see some improvement from the first or second session with major relief by around six sessions, depending on how long the issue has been present and how your body responds to treatment. After that, some people choose to move onto a maintenance plan to help manage recurring tension and keep things feeling more comfortable.
